Do not combine these rows into one price range. A windscreen repair may be a resin injection, while paintwork pricing depends on preparation, colour matching, painting, clear coat and possible bodywork.
Is the chip in the glass or the paint?
A windscreen chip is a small impact in the glass. According to Autoklinikka, a chip smaller than a two-euro coin can often be repaired, but size alone is not decisive. A crack, the distance from the glass edge and the structure of the damage affect whether repair is possible.
A paint chip may be on the bonnet, wing or door. It can be a mark in the clear coat, paint broken through to metal or damage with rust already underneath. The paint shop chooses the method after seeing the depth and extent.
What to do immediately after an impact
If the chip is in the windscreen
If possible, cover the impact with clean, transparent tape. This keeps dirt and moisture out until an assessment. Book a glass repair as soon as you can. Do not press the chip or add glue, liquid or another substance.
If the glass is cracked, the damage is close to an edge or you are unsure whether it affects visibility, ask a glass shop whether repair or replacement is needed. Do not decide if the car is safe to drive from a photograph or coin test alone.
If the chip is in the paint
Clean the spot gently and ask a paint shop for an assessment if the paint is broken, metal is visible, rust has appeared or the impact includes a dent. Paint damage is not repaired with the same resin used for a windscreen chip.

For paintwork, the job may be polishing, local painting or full-panel painting. If the panel is dented or rusty, bodywork and primer may be needed first. The word “stone chip” therefore does not tell you the amount of work by itself.
Can you repair a stone chip yourself?
For glass, the safest first step is to protect the spot and let a glass shop assess it. A repair kit cannot tell you whether the damage’s structure makes it repairable or whether the windscreen needs replacing.
You can touch up a small paint mark if you know how to use the correct paint for the car. Do not sand a large area or cover rust without an assessment: a poor colour match or preparation can make a later repair larger.
Insurance: check your glass cover
Glass-cover terms vary by insurer and policy. Before booking, check your policy for glass cover, excess and the claims procedure.
Paint damage is a different insurance and repair situation from glass damage. Do not assume that glass-cover terms apply to car painting.
