Later, however, can be expensive. The same job that costs an estimated €150–250 when done in time can rise to €500–800 when delayed, as the discs and calipers wear out in addition to the pads. The cost of brake service is therefore not determined only by what the workshop charges, but by when the brakes are serviced.

Most important first: brake pad replacement, brake disc replacement and brake fluid replacement are different jobs, not one package. That’s why two workshops can give different prices for the same “brake service” even if neither is trying to cheat. One includes cleaning the slide pins in the job, the other bills it separately.

They are not average prices for all cars or workshops, but they are a concrete anchor because the price is public and verifiable. According to the price list, the front axle job includes, in addition to replacing the pads and, if necessary, the discs, cleaning and lubricating the slide pins. What Makes Up the Cost of Brake Service?
When two quotes differ, the reason is almost always one of these:
- Car make and model. Parts and labour for premium cars are more expensive, and some models require special tools.
- Front or rear axle. Front brakes do the most work, and their service is usually more expensive. In the price list example too, the front axle (from €169) is more expensive than the rear axle (from €159).
- Original part or aftermarket. Original parts and aftermarket parts are priced differently. The most important thing is that the parts meet the car manufacturer’s requirements.
- Additional work. Freeing up calipers, cleaning and lubricating slide pins, brake fluid replacement and ABS diagnostics can increase the bill. Diagnostics can cost, for example, €69–119.
- Location. Prices in the Helsinki metropolitan area are usually higher than in smaller localities.
What Can Brake Service Include?
“Brake service” is not a package with fixed contents. From the quote, it’s worth checking which of the following jobs are actually included.

Brake Warning Signs: When Do Brakes Need Inspection?
Brakes rarely fail without warning first. They squeal, vibrate, pull to one side, or light up as a warning light on the dashboard. A symptom alone does not tell the cause, but it tells you when the brakes need to be examined.

Brakes Squeal – Is It Always a Fault?
Not always. Squealing can be caused by the wear indicator, moisture or a contaminated surface. Because the cause cannot be confirmed without hearing and inspecting the brakes, it’s worth asking a workshop to assess the situation if the sound is new or recurring. If the squealing is accompanied by grinding, vibration or reduced power, don’t wait.
How to Check Pad Thickness Yourself
Pad thickness can often be seen through the gaps in the wheel rim. A new pad is about 10–12 mm thick, and under 3 mm means replacement. The check is conveniently done, for example, when changing tyres. If the pads look thin or the disc shows deep grooves, book an inspection before the situation escalates.
When Are Brakes Replaced? Replacement Intervals and Inspection
There is no single mileage limit for brake pads and discs that suits all cars. According to Bosch Car Service, wear depends on, among other things, driving style, driving conditions and the car. The figures below are general rules of thumb, not the manufacturer’s instructions: the car’s own service schedule always takes precedence.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which is why it is replaced at regular intervals regardless of mileage.
An inspection should be done at least once a year or every 15,000–20,000 kilometres, and at the latest in connection with scheduled maintenance. When brakes are serviced, both sides on the same axle are always replaced together. If the disc has vibration or grooves, the pads and discs are usually replaced at the same time.
Finnish Winter, Road Salt and Electric Car Brakes
Finland’s salt, moisture and temperature fluctuations accelerate brake corrosion and caliper seizing. That’s why it’s worth checking the condition of the brakes also when only a few kilometres have accumulated. The best time is in autumn before changing to winter tyres, and the second in spring before summer, when the winter salt has been washed away. In electric and hybrid cars, deceleration partly happens through regeneration, so brake pad wear does not correspond to that of a combustion-engine car. This does not remove the need for inspections. Due to low use, discs can rust and brakes can seize more easily, and “dragging” brakes and uneven wear are more common. The price of brake service is not a matter for negotiation, but you can influence the total cost.
- Request an itemised quote from several workshops. Compare only when the quotes state the same job and the same axle, as well as whether parts and VAT are included.
- Agree on the parts. Original parts and parts from well-known aftermarket manufacturers are priced differently. Make sure the parts meet the car manufacturer’s requirements.
- Time the work according to symptoms, not mileage. Replacing pads in time is clearly cheaper than a situation where discs and calipers have to be repaired.
- Combine in the same visit. If brake fluid replacement is also due, it’s worth having it done at the same time.
How to Request Comparable Quotes
Send the workshops the same initial information so the prices are comparable. According to the KKV guideline, in the work order you should agree at least on the jobs to be done and the spare parts to be replaced, the price and its contents, the procedure for additional work, payment terms and the completion time of the work.
