Studded or Friction Tyres – Which to Choose?
Choosing winter tyres is a compromise between grip, noise and price. In this guide we compare studded and friction tyres honestly – and cover the rules that apply to everyone driving in Finland.

What is the difference between studded and friction tyres?
| Criterion | Studded tyres | Friction tyres |
|---|---|---|
| Grip on ice | Excellent | Good (new models) |
| Grip on snow | Good | Good |
| Grip on wet asphalt | Moderate | Good |
| Noise | Louder | Quiet |
| Road wear | Higher | Lower |
| Price | Usually more expensive | Usually cheaper |
Which should you choose?
- Studded tyres suit you if you drive a lot on icy or snowy rural roads, in the countryside or in the north, where conditions are often harsher.
- Friction tyres suit you if you mostly drive in the city, where roads are ploughed and salted – friction tyres grip well on wet asphalt and reduce noise.
- Mixed use is common: friction tyres on the front and studded tyres on the rear – but experts recommend the same tyre set on all wheels.
Rules and laws
- Winter tyres are mandatory when conditions require them (typically from November to March). The tread depth in the main grooves must be at least 3.0 mm.
- Studded tyres may be used 1.11–31.3 and at other times if weather or road conditions require it (Road Traffic Act 729/2018, §105–106).
- You may drive with friction tyres all year round.
- Helsinki has streets where studded tyres are banned (e.g. Lönnrotinkatu); the police can also fine you for the wrong tyres depending on conditions.
